The evening of Tuesday, November 27, members of the Centralia School
Board held a special meeting to choose a new member.
Board member Mike Fuller had resigned to take a new job outside the district. The district bylaws required the board to appoint a replacement to fill his seat until the next election.
The board had three applicants from which to choose, Erle Bennett, Sarah Rausch and Rusty Dutton.
They chose Bennett, by a vote of 5-0, with board member and president Justin Romine absent.
Bennett, who spent 30 years in education, the vast majority of it as a football coach and physical education teacher for the Centralia School District, has for the past two years been director of the Centralia Parks Department.
Bennett took a few moments to speak with the Fireside Guard regarding his future with the Centralia R-VI School Board. He stressed that the board had yet to swear him in, an event scheduled to take place Dec. 11.
He said he applied for the board position because the district has given a lot to him and it is time for him to give back. “I feel like this is one way for me to give back to the school system.”
