It all started with a fire.
Though Denny Rusch, chief of the Centralia Fire Department might say there is some confusion on which one.
One was January 28, 1982.
The other, date long forgotten, was during Rusch’s grade-school days.
“I was sitting on my bicycle in the Chance House driveway with some buddies one night watching the old Armstrong house burn down,” Rusch said, sitting on a couch in the Centralia Firehouse at the end of a long day that included him, members of the fire department and at least 14 members of the Centralia High School National Honor Society bagging candy for at least 1,000 Centralians to enjoy Christmas morning. It was also the day the City of Centralia recognized Rusch for 35 years of service with the Centralia Fire Department.
