Though playing against bigger schools in the 2018 Blair Oaks Football Jamboree, the Centralia Panthers’ actions on Falcon Field’s artificial turf made it clear to the California Pintos and Helias Crusaders the opposing team had best pay attention when across the line from Coach Jim Newsted’s Centralia Panthers.
“We had some good passes, I was really happy in our first set,” Newsted said regarding the Panthers play against the Pintos. “I thought we did really well in the first game. The second game, against Helias, a bigger school, we kind of got back on our heels a little.”
He said John Durant at quarterback “made some pretty good moves.” He also said their receivers, especially Elijah Crutchfield showed some good hands, making big catches against the Pintos.
The Panther defense, definitely put a smile on Newsted’s face.
“I thought the defense did well against both teams,” he said. “I was particularly pleased. Helias only got one touchdown on us. As far as the varsity, I think they fared very well against both teams.”
Helias was running a double-tight spread offense and California the same as Centralia, a pistol offense.
