Playgrounds shut down per county order

Per the Boone county commission stay at home order the Centralia Parks Department is temporarily shutting down some of its facilities.

The afternoon of Wednesday, March 25, parks employees finished wrapping yellow “caution” tape around the department’s playground equipment. The county order mandates their closure until 8 a.m., April 24, though a county spokersperson has said the order can be extended or rescinded.

The Centralia Parks Department is taping off its playgrounds, per county order.

The recreation center is also closed and per a joint letter from Erle Bennett – parks director, Heather Russell – Centralia city administrator and Chris Cox – Centralia mayor: “At this time we anticipate reopening the recreation center when school is back in session. The ┬ásituation is still fluid and, if we are unable to reopen as expected, we will reevaluate at that time. We appreciated your patience while we continue to make decision with the health and safety of all our members in mind. City officials, employees, and the Centralia Park Board are working together to find the best solutions during this unprecdent situation with the COVID-19 pandemic and we appreciate the support of the membership while we continue to make difficult decisions.”

The letter also addressed the payment of recreation center memberships.

“We have decided that it is in the best interest of our Centralia Recreation Center members to evaluate their membership payments during this critical time. Because members will not be able to utilize the recreation center from March 16, 2020 through April 3, 2020, which is approximately three weeks, we have decided that monthly payments for recreation center memberships will be suspended until May 10, 2020. This means that members who pay via monthly bank draft will not have a deduction to their accounts on April 10, 2020. Any member who has paid their membership in full will have their membership date automatically extended an additional four weeks.”

Bennett said members who want to continue have monthly payments withdrawn from their accounts, “Or do not want to extend their membership by a month at the end of their contracts, please contact us by email no later than April 5.”
