Things will be leaner next year in the Centralia R-VI School District.
As more than 30 people watched from benches in the Centralia Intermediate School cafeteria, the evening of April 9, the newly reconstituted Centralia R-VI Board of Education voted in $554,695.74-worth of budget cuts.
The board, led by Justin Romine as president, Jason Hedrick, vice-president, Jed Angell, treasurer and Rita Lawrence, secretary, first swore in newly elected members Rusty Dutton and Harvey Million for three-year terms, along with Erle Bennett, reelected to finish a two-year term.
R-VI superintendent Darin Ford also thanked outgoing board members Nathan Chitwood and Todd Hudson for their service. Chitwood had served the board for 12 years, Hudson, three.
While other items were discussed, it was likely the budget discussion that drew the crowd.
Ford spoke to the board regarding how they had come to the current fiscal situation.
Contributing factors, he said included keeping salaries competitive while transportation, health insurance and special needs costs went up at the same time state and federal funding of public schools went down.
