CHS class of 2020 holds outdoor graduation

It was a graduation for the record books. The Centralia R-VI School district held its second outdoor graduation in 15 years and did so while adhering to state and county social distancing recommendations.

Centralia High School’s best of the best — Mallory Smith – salutatorian, left, and Anna Romine – valedictorian, were recognized as the top-two of CHS’ class of 2020 during the school’s graduation ceremony at Miller Field, June 13.

With  a socially-distanced audience of less than 300 watching from the stands, the event showcased, in some case via technology, the class of 2020’s achievements.

While the choir and band were pre-recorded from healthier times, the audience still got to see the class’ top 10, a fireowrks display in the student’s honor, the awarding of diplomas and the student speakers.

Students entered the ceremony walking beneath a trellis fabricated and donated by Centralia’s Spirit Machinery. Afterward the trellis took up permanent residence in Centralia’s Chance Gardens.
