Michael Coleman, Holy Spirit Catholic Church’s new pastor, was not always a man of the cloth.
Coleman, who began holding services at Holy Spirit in October, began his professional life as a journalist.
He graduated from the University of Missouri School of journalism in 1975 and his first and only job in the field was the Catholic Missourian, a Jefferson City-based bi-weekly newspaper.
And that, Coleman said, was exactly how he planned it.
“Where I grew up, everybody wanted to be a priest when they grew up,” he said of his childhood in Festus Missouri, where his mother raised the family as a full-time housewife, while his father commuted back and forth to Herculaneum where he worked as a lead smelter.
