Jesus had a close relationship with His Father. I am speaking about God because we really don’t have details about the relationship Jesus had with Joseph, the man who raised Jesus. However, we do have numerous details of the relationship that Jesus had with the one He called His Father, and who was His Father, God.

In John 14:2, Jesus spoke of His Father’s house as a place with lots of room for lots of people to live. Jesus promised that He was going to prepare places for all who would believe in Him as the Son of the Father to live there as well in His Father’s house.

Jesus declared in John 14:6 that the only way to know His Father was through Jesus. When Philip, one of the apostles heard Jesus make that statement He asked Jesus to show the apostles the Father. Jesus replied to Philip in John 14:9 that those who have seen Jesus have seen the Father. Jesus was establishing not only the closeness that He had with the Father, but also the potential closeness that we as believers in Christ Jesus could have with the Father.

The closeness that Jesus had with God His Father is further revealed in John 14:21 where Jesus told us that when we show our love for Him by following His instructions that we will also experience the love of His Father. Jesus went on in verse 23 to say that if we follow His instructions that Father God and Jesus the Son will make their home with us. Going back to verse 18, Jesus promises the apostles and us that He will not leave us Fatherless. He is referring there to the promise of the person of the Holy Spirit that He mentioned in John 14:16 whom He said would be with the apostles and us forever on the condition that the apostles and us would love Jesus by following His instructions.

I believe one reason that Jesus had such closeness with His Heavenly Father was that Joseph, the man who filled the role of his earthly father, was in submission to God and God’s Word and taught Jesus obedience to the Word of God. We know that Jesus was with the Heavenly Father at creation before being born in the flesh, but the influence of nurture, love, and discipline from Joseph was not lost on Jesus.

You and I can have the same closeness to our Heavenly Father that Jesus had, if we commit our hearts and lives to Jesus Christ by faith in Jesus as God’s Son and believe in Him and on Him and receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior.

May your Father’s Day be blessed with some time with your Heavenly Father!
