Pastor David Hartgrove, Crossroads Cathedral Assembly of God, Centralia
It is a new year! Its time to get the new year off to a good start. Getting a new start for the new year is not only a good thing, it is a God thing. God is so good to offer us a fresh start in our soul and spirit and in our heart and life, He likewise wants to help us start off a new year.
The first thing we can do to get the new year off to a good start is to forgive all the wrongs against us from the past year. That includes forgiving ourselves.
Maybe we messed up some things in our life in the old year or maybe someone hurt us or did us wrong.
What better way to get off to a good start than letting go of hurt and pain from others or even self inflicted.
I didn’t say it would be easy, but there is no way to move on unless we are willing to forgive others and ourselves as well.
Another way to get a good start is to think about our priorities. Certainly God should have a priority in our lives. Seeking His will through study of God’s Word and through prayer can help us bring our priorities into proper vision.
After God we need to put our spouse (if you have one) into top priority. Then our children (if we have children). God wants you and I to put ourselves close to the top as a priority as well. I don’t mean selfishly.
I just mean that if don’t take care of ourselves we won’t be at the top of our game to properly prioritize the most important persons in our lives.
God wants us to put ourselves in priority that we might be at our best to serve Him. Again, this includes meditation, prayer, study of God’s Word and fellowship with other Christians.
It also includes getting proper rest, exercise, and proper diet. The new year is a good time to put ourselves close to the top or our priority list in all these things.
I am so glad that God gave His Son upon the cross so that mankind could have an opportunity to have a new start in their lives. If you have never heard the plan of salvation it is very simple.
First confess that we have sinned against God, others and ourselves.
Second repent of sin and ask God to forgive you.
Third, put your faith in what God did by giving His Son for you and I.
Fourth by receiving His Son into our hearts and minds by trusting in Him alone to save us. He will give you and I a new start. It is called the New Birth!
May you have a Happy and Blessed New Year and may it be a year of peace, joy and love!
