Interim Pastor Robert Hudson, Littleby Baptist Church

In John chapter 3, John the Baptist’s disciples were concerned that Jesus was baptizing people and it was hurting John’s ministry. They obviously did not understand why this was happening and felt that since John baptized Jesus, that John’s ministry should come first. John made a very simple but profound statement.

“He must increase, but I must decrease.” – John 3:30

John’s statement was simply that no matter what he has accomplished in his life, no matter the size of the following he had, no matter how many lives he touched… all that truly mattered was that Jesus must increase and John would decrease.

This verse starts with ‘He must’… now if I tell my son that ‘he must’ do something, those with teenagers know that does not always mean that it will actually get done. But, when the Bible states ‘He must’… it is an absolute necessity that it must happen.

It is a fact that at some point everyone is going to recognize who Jesus is. In Romans it tells us that every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord. In other words, every person who ever lived will recognize that Jesus has increased to Lord of all, which means we have decreased.

Decreasing has nothing to do we our value in the eyes of the Lord. He values us so much that He died for us so that He can spend an eternity with us.

Decreasing has everything to do with who is in charge of our lives. We are flawed human beings and our God is perfect in every way. If you had to choose who was in charge of your life would it be you, the flawed human, or our perfect Lord and Savior.

If Jesus is the Lord of your life He will increase and you will decrease.

Remember Jesus teachings and His commands, put God first…He Must Increase.

Trust in the Lord with all of your heart… He Must Increase.

Honor the Lord with your possessions… He Must Increase.

Put God first in all things and in doing so He Will Increase!

Putting God first means submitting how we spend our time to Him. The time we spend reading the Bible, talking to God, and doing the things He has commanded us to do… Must Increase. The time spent doing the worldly things Must Decrease. In our finances, we need to put God first. His control of our finances must Increase and our control needs to decrease. In our relationships, Jesus must be the center of them. His influence Must Increase.

Think about any area of your life where you are struggling, anything that has you feeling overwhelmed, anything that is causing you to feel down. Who is leading it, You or God?

Are you fighting with your spouse, is the stress at work getting you down, is there a medical issue that has you worried, a wayward child that keeps you up at night, wondering what you are supposed to be doing with your life, you name it… Put Jesus first in all things. He Must Increase.

Do you believe that Jesus is ‘the way, the truth, and the life and that the only way to the Father is through Him’? Then remember ‘He must Increase and you must decrease.’ Put Him first in all things and let His influence in your life Increase.

I dare you to pray this over your lives. Everyday pray that with every thought and every action that Jesus increases and you decrease.

You are going to meet Jesus face to face someday, it would be better to bow to Him now and acknowledge that ‘He Must Increase’ before it is too late.
