It came down to two.
Mac Dollens, a fifth-grade student, and Lucas Shuman, a fourth-grade student sat on the CIS stage surrounded by empty chairs and facing 315 of so of their fellow students along with dozens of other friends and family.
Stepping to the microphone, Max spelt “stylish.”
Then it was Lucas’ turn and he spelt “knelt.”
Mac spelt “creatures.”
Lucas spelt “swiveled.”
Mac drew “resemble,” and misspelled.
Lucas stepped to the microphone, spelled “resemble” correctly. Then followed up by correctly spelling “leopard” to win the title of Centralia Intermediate School spelling bee champion.
As the crowd went wild, Lucas covered his face with his sweatshirt-sleeve-covered hands. The he turned to his left and shook Mac’s hand.
