People in Sturgeon are pitching together to give back, to support, a woman who in the eyes of many has given selflessly to the Sturgeon Community.
Flechia Spalding, a teacher and driving force of the Sturgeon R-V pre-school program since its inception in 2009.
Spalding, who is responsible for hundreds of the district’s children getting that important hand up that pre-school can provide to children’s education was recently diagnosed with severe diabetes and cardiac issues.
Those maladies led to her being admitted to the University Hospital in July and placed on a ventilator. While there, physicians discovered, as Spalding experienced vision loss, a blockage in the blood vessels around her eyes.
Friends of the Spalding family are holding a fundraiser to help the family, her husband Shawn and their two sons Caleb and Cameron, cope with the massive medical expenses.
Though she tried to work through it all, Spalding submitted her letter of resignation September 12 to the Sturgeon R-V School district where she had taught kindergarten and pre-kindergarten since 1995.
So far her friends and admirers have organized a benefit dinner, scheduled for 5- to 8 p.m., Saturday, October 19 at the Sturgeon High School.
