The Pastor’s Desk: Stress is not our friend

Stress, anxiety, worry, concern, tension, nervousness, and panic are things that we deal with from time to time. Many are feeling them even more with all the uncertainty in the world today. Most of the anxiety, stress, worry, tension, and panic we are hit with is because we are trying to control something that we cannot control. We cannot control the economy, but we worry about the impact it is has on our finances. We cannot control the future, we cannot control who is going to get sick, we cannot control a lot of things, but we worry about them all the same.

“Therefore I tell you: Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing?” – Matthew 6:25

Jesus said, ‘Don’t worry!’ Here’s the thing, most of our worry and stress is over things we cannot change. If it is something we cannot change, worrying about it does no good. If it is something we can change, we need to change it and move on. Worrying about it does us no good.

Much of our worry, anxiety, and stress come from things that are temporary. We may be stressing over a bad day at work, a doctor appointment we have next week, how we are going to make the car payment, will the school year be back to ‘normal’ come August.

These are all real concerns that all of us are going to deal with at one point in time or another, but they are Temporary. Everything on this side of Glory is temporary. Since they are temporary, Jesus would tell us ‘Don’t worry.’
