Joyce was born on November 19, 1934, to the late Robert and Idora (Lowrey) Davis in Steele, Missouri. The family moved to St. Louis, MO in the 1940’s. Joyce and her siblings grew up spending their summers in the Missouri boot heel with their grandparents who farmed. After graduating from St. Lois Central High School in 1951, Joyce met and married Oliver Wayne Sheffield on November 22, 1952. They settled in Hannibal, MO and moved to Hallsville, MO in 1970, where they finished raising their family of five children. Joyce and Oliver were married 62 years before Oliver preceded her in death on January 29, 2016.
Joyce was a homemaker and was always home before her children left for school and was there for them when they returned home. She was an excellent seamstress and sewed for others to create income for her large family. She also sold Avon and enjoyed the socialization with friends and neighbors it created. After her youngest child entered high school, she secured a full-time position with the Department of Infectious Diseases in the University of Missouri School of Medicine and worked as that office’s clerical support staff. Joyce loved this job and worked about ten years before retiring.
She was a member of Red Top Christian Church in Hallsville. Joyce served on the church’s Outreach Committee and loved helping the community and other recipients of this committee’s important purpose. This brought her great joy. She was a beloved member of Red Top’s congregation and made many dear friends there. Joyce’s favorite hymn was “It Well With My Soul”.
