Member churches of the Centralia Ministerial Alliance are stepping up to help ensure area school-age children have access to a healthy lunch during July.

Volunteers from the Centralia First Christian Church, the Centralia United Methodist Church and the Holy Spirit Catholic Church will each take turns providing free lunches to school age, 18 years old and younger, children during the four weeks of July.

Serving beneath a tent on the south side of the Centralia City Square Park, across from the Centralia Post Office, representatives of the three churches will handout sack lunches to school-age children from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

First Christian Church volunteers will staff the tent they week of July 3. July 5 and July 7.

United Methodist Church volunteers will staff and serve the week of July 10, 12 and 14.

Holy Spirit Catholic Church volunteers will work the week of July 24, 26 and 28.

First Christian Church’s Teresa Hutton said the churches were discussing who would take responsibility for the fourth week.

“We heard about the Buddy Packs and how kids would not be getting them, when summer school was out,” Hutton said when asked what motivated the Ministerial Alliance to serve the lunches. “For some of the children, school is the only place they can get a healthy lunch, or lunch at all.”
