A little bit of civil engineering is happening at the corner of Sneed and Rollins this week.
A four-way stop sign is going in there.
Centralia City Administrator Tara Strain said the sign is a response to a traffic- and pedestrian-need.
The work is scheduled to be complete by March 15.
The two new signs will be complete with flashing red lights for the first 60 days, Strain said. “That will draw more attention to the change in signs,” she said.
“Our downtown area is getting busier,” Strain said regarding the change. “We’ve got fuller businesses and new restaurants. We have more pedestrian traffic. Three of the four intersections around the square are already four-way stops. This would make all four stops around the square, four-way stops. This will improve pedestrian and traffic safety.”
This is a city project, not a MoDOT project, Strain said.
“The issues were brought to the board. The board voted. They agreed this should be a four-way stop. This is a city-funded project and will be performed by city workers,” she said. “The outlay will just be the cost of the signage.”
