Ronald Reagan was president of the United States of America, John Ashcroft was governor of Missouri, Mildred Knowles was mayor of Centralia, and Bob Swank was director of the Centralia Chamber of Commerce.
It was 1988 and that is when John Ashton attended his first Centralia Anchor Festival.
Towing his cherry red four-wheel trailer behind a red Ford pickup truck, he wheeled in with the carnival rides and other vendors and parked “the exact same trailer we use today,” on the Centralia City Square Park’s grass.
“When we first started, we were out on the park, but every year it would rain and they would have to bring a tractor in and pull us out and it would leave ruts.
