Lights of Christmas

Company Christmas
Growing up in Centralia, most of my friend's parents worked for A.B. Chance Co., while my Dad worked at a pumping station outside of town. Back then, Panhandle Pipeline had a full roster of employees, and they kept those engines pumping twenty-four hours a day. It was shift work, which meant taking your turn working nights and weekends and my father did just that. Then, there was the swing shift, when sleep was little, and family time was even less.

December
Seven years this December, I was making a list and checking it twice and the list had nothing to do with naughty and nice. That year, I was packing for my youngest daughter's wedding and worrying about the weather. Family and friends were traveling from everywhere; rooms were reserved, the caterer coming, and the funds were non-refundable.

Check your pockets
I knew it was coming but the warm days and moon-lit nights lulled me into thinking that maybe this year it wouldn't happen. How can winter come calling when my red bushes are still red, my blown leaves need blowing and the yard, believe it or not, probably needs to be mowed?
