An audience of 13 sat in on the March 11 meeting of the Centralia R-VI Board of Education.

All seven board members attended.

Among the discussion topics were the planned renovation of Chester Boren Middle School and the renovation of the Centralia High School track, football field and bleachers.

The board voted in favor of renovating the CHS track, bleachers and football field and took a deep dive into renovating Chester Boren Middle School.

Finance came first, with R-IV Superintendent Steven Chancellor discussing the final payment to Sircal for CHS construction. “But you will still see Sircal on site as they finish laying new floor tile around the southeast entrance of the gym. That is too high-traffic an area to pour right now.”

Marshall Gingrich, executive director of operations, reviewed the four bids for upgrading the CBMS HVAC system. He recommended Teel’s bid of $128,725, with the task to be completed by August’s end. He said the amount was over the $85,000 budgeted due to required sheet-metal work and possibly August deadline. The board gave him permission to discuss the job with Teel and search for savings.

In a related note, Chancellor said the district has qualified for $63,000 grant to pay for the new security doors on district buildings. That, he said, was how the district budget, could absorb the budget overage for the CBMS HVAC. The board unanimously agreed and approved the Teel contract negotiations.

Chancellor reviewed future work at CBMS, introducing a 4-year time-line.

“Flooring, lighting and ceiling,” Gingrich said regarding the first phase of the four-year CBMS buildings and grounds renovation plan, which would start with the portion along the hallway parallel to Jefferson Street.
