Multiple reputable national news sources have reported rioting and storming of the halls of congress by supporters of outgoing United States President Donald Trump.

(The Center Square) – Supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol Building Wednesday afternoon, interrupting the congressional session that was meeting to confirm the Electoral College votes.

The Capitol was reportedly put on lockdown and the House of Representatives and Senate went into recess as protesters gathered by the thousands outside the building. Some of the crowd managed to get inside the building and reportedly were just outside the Senate chamber.

The protesters appeared to have come from a rally earlier in the day in which Trump condemned, as he has repeatedly since November, the results of the Nov. 3 election that made former Vice President Joe Biden the president-elect.

Trump didn’t directly address the actions of the protesters but he did ask them to avoid violence, tweeting “Please support our Capitol Police and Law Enforcement. They are truly on the side of our Country. Stay peaceful!”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (MO-04) issued the following statement in response to the violence on Capitol Hill:
“The violent rioting on Capitol Hill is appalling and must stop! These so-called protesters have exhibited behavior one would expect to witness during a third world coup. This disgusting behavior is not representative of what we stand for as a country. This is thuggery and violators must be punished to the fullest extent allowed under federal law. We cannot heal our divides as a nation if this lawlessness persists,” Hartzler said.”
