An audience of eight  attended the September 12 meeting of the Centralia R-VI Board of Education.

The board’s actions regarding the district’s buildings and the health of its students were two of the main topics that evening.

The board heard a presentation from a representative of the Paradigm architectural firm. She said the firm has made a lot of progress in creating the bond-funded capital improvement plans.

Those include new CHS classroom additions, renovation of the main office and bathrooms.

That will include ADA work on the bathrooms and more modern and maintenance-friendly fixtures.

Renovation of the office will include adding 2,000  square feet and entry security changes, “So you don’t just walk right into the main building,” she said. The Paradigm representative discussed adding 14,500 square feet to be used as science classrooms and three other classrooms to be placed between the Ag and main high school buildings. One classroom will be hardened to also serve as a tornado shelter. An information technology room was also discussed for the construction between the Ag building and the main high school building.

She said the plans should be complete Oct. 20 and are 70 percent complete, and then they will begin the bidding process. The full project is projected to cost $6.6 million, she said and the CHS and CES projects will be bid separately.
