Rev. Eric Hill, Antioch Baptist Church

In our world today we see how prevalent the drug culture is, on people and families.

By turning towards drugs and alcohol, the individual doesn’t realize the damage that it causes. What may have started out as an exciting experience of fun, soon spiraled into a messy dependency and a whole lot of other problems. So how do you work your way out of the problem? First, he or she must see that they have a problem and need help. People often try to curb the bad habit with force. But consequently, when our mind revolts and starts screaming, we tend to give in to what the mind says. Curbing the mind when there’s an urgent urge for the drug or alcohol could lead the person to do it more.

So, what do we do then? How do we get out of this vicious cycle? You turn to Jesus. Jesus has a plan and He is willing to help you overcome your addiction. I understand that there are a lot of programs out there, that can help you. But there are a few things you have to do before you get to a twelve-step program. A couple of things first you must have a determination to quit, then you turn to Jesus. How does His plan work? Glad you asked, I will give you four steps, when add together equal freedom,  1. Believe on Jesus 2. Continue in His Word 3. Be His disciple 4. Know the Truth, And the Truth(Jesus) shall make you free. John 8:32b, can you see how it all ties together? The more we know Jesus, the more freedom we gain. This takes the us right out of it, we are not the ones who make ourselves free. We are unable to do that. It is Jesus Christ alone that allows us to experience any kind of freedom, and it’s only through His prerequisites of belief and discipleship.
