I try to be a person that wakes each morning with a purpose, and goes to bed each night knowing what the next day’s purpose will be. Lately though, I seem to jump out of bed with an ever-increasing resolve.

I need to check on Zelensky.

That was also the last thing I did before I went to bed; I had to check on President Zelensky. Like the rest of the world, I am saddened and sickened about what’s happening to the people of Ukraine. There have been other conflicts in the world and we have watched them unfold in our living room. But this, this war far from home, seems different.

It seems personal.

Of course, I rely on the news to give me the facts so I am careful what I watch. I also don’t spend time on the news, I just want thirty minutes that will offer an overview of the world and what to worry about next. I only want news, the Walter Cronkite kind, who checks and double checks and gives it to me straight.

How is President Zelensky?

The Russians are coming, we all knew they were coming, to invade a peace-loving country and stake a claim over its government, people and natural resources. I am not well versed on world events or pretend to know more than I really do. I am not in the know, I am not well renowned, and I am certainly not a politician. I do, however, understand repercussions and escalation and treaties that can’t be violated or changed or broken without fear of nuclear aggression.

Who doesn’t get that?

Still, I watch as the president of a war ridden country begs for our help. He doesn’t ask from seclusion or from a resort on the edge of a peaceful sea. Zelensky doesn’t broadcast in exile or from a secret bunker or across the border in a neighboring country. This president refuses to leave his people. He speaks to us from broken streets full of rubble and ruin and the mass graves of his countrymen who refused to leave their lives. President Zelensky, to me, is the epitome of a leader. He is the president who will save Air Force One, the president that shoots down the aliens and saves the world.
