An audience of three attended the December 14, meeting of the Sturgeon R-V Board of Education.
The upcoming bond issue and renovations to the district’s Patton Street campus, the site of its middle and elementary schools, were among the topics.
R-V Superintendent Melia Franklin reviewed ESSER funds supported renovations at the Patton Street campus.
Those include: a new secured entrance at the middle school, a new stairway and ADA-compliant lift, and secured entrance to the administrative offices, updates to the administrative and middle school offices, renovations to the middle school restrooms, new flooring throughout the middle and elementary schools, exterior door replacement, exterior building improvements and landscaping in front of the library.

No action was taken on the ballot language. The board members, however, discussed the composition of a committee to promote the bond issue.
Doss and Franklin asked for volunteers to lead the committee and serve on it.
Franklin said she thought a member of the superintendent’s advisor group might want to help. Initial members were school board member Freedom Pollard and SHS Principal Jennifer Campbell.
The PTSO report included Penny Wars raising $468.64. PTSO representative Kelly Sharp said 16 families were adopted by the community for Christmas, the PTSO adopted three more.
MPER MOU, Missouri Partnership for Education Renewal was unanimously approved by the board with Board member Bethany Stone abstaining. Melia Franklin said membership has helped Sturgeon R-V recruit student teachers.
During her report she discussed the pending open enrollment bill. She said the bill would be on the legislature’s desks in February. Franklin said she and other superintendents have concerns about the bill and statewide, most districts are against it.
They discussed the three bids for snow removal, from Custom Cut Lawn Care, Salter Lawn Services, and Sutton Excavating LLC.
“In the past when we have gone for cheaper it has not always panned out,” Misty Doss said. They vote to accept the bid from Sutton Excavating for $1,800
In other business, Franklin discussed recruiting new teachers and the possibility of posting “anticipated openings,” to help draw applications.
She also read a retirement letter from Karen Groves, former teacher and ACP coordinator. The resignation was unanimously accepted. She began teaching for Sturgeon R-V in 1996.
Franklin also mentioned KELLY Services would be increasing the wages for paraprofessionals and non-certified substitutes to conform with the increase in minimum wage.
Board members were also reminded, 5 p.m., Dec. 27, is the last day to file for one of the open school board seats.
