Zechariah 12:10 – 13:1
I love to read prophecy. Hundreds of years before Jesus, the Spirit of God revealed to the prophets many things about how he would die and what he would do. And the prophets did not know his name would be Jesus, but they spoke of him in titles and symbols. They called him The Root of Jesse, the Bright and Morning Star, the Sun of Righteousness rising with healing in his wings, and so many more.
This Easter, there is one in particular that has stuck with me. It’s found here in 13:1 – the Fountain. It says that God is going to open a fountain that will rid people of sin and uncleanness.
Who is that Fountain? It’s Jesus, of course. And I thought, “Hey, that’s a nice thing to say, because I like fountains.” They’re relaxing and beautiful. And then God showed me how and when Jesus became a fountain, and I was stunned. I pictured Jesus hanging on the cross, bleeding from a thousand wounds all over his body. The stripes, the punctures, the piercing. See, most fountains spray upward, but on that day, God opened a fountain for us, and this fountain poured down, down from the cross, a fountain of his precious, perfect blood.
God opened that fountain for sin and for uncleanness. Now anyone can wash in that fountain and be freed and cleansed from every stain. I bless God that Jesus is our fountain. But it also fills me with such sadness to picture the greatest, most gentle and loving being imaginable ripped open to the point that he became a fountain of blood.
But God showed me something else, in one of my favorite Bible stories. It’s the story of the disciple Thomas.
