J.C. “Jay” McCubbins

J.C. “Jay” McCubbins, 91, the son of the late Clayton R. McCubbin and Janie L. Keys McCubbin, went home to be with the Lord on December 28, 2023.  He passed away at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mexico, MO.

J.C. was born on February 29, 1932, in Englewood, Missouri in Boone County.  J.C. was one of 13 children and was raised in Boone County.  Jay attended Centralia School class of 1949.  He enlisted in the Navy and served 1951-1955 at Boca Chica Field, Key West, FL as an Airship Mechanic.  When discharged he traveled to California to meet and marry his “pen pal” Mary.  He married Mary E. Freudenthal on June 2, 1956, at the Community Presbyterian Church in Newhall, CA by pastor John C. Weston.  They returned to Missouri in 1962.  J.C. worked for Stover Carpet then joined the Plumber & Pipefitters Union where he worked many jobs throughout Missouri including Harper Plumbing in Centralia, Missouri.  J.C. and Mary moved to the Lake of the Ozarks in 1993 to semi-retire.  Jay opened a business in Sunrise Beach, Dependable Plumbing and worked until his retirement.  He and his wife, Mary, moved to Centralia in 2016 to live closer to their family.

J.C. enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing guitar, boating, photography, traveling and spent many memorable hours with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  J.C. accepted Christ in 1956 and gave a lot of his time to his church, serving as Deacon, Trustee, Choir member and volunteer for Operation Christmas Child.

J.C. is survived by his sisters, Ruth Ketchum of Mesa, AZ, Virginia Hinten (Glen), Centralia, MO; brothers, Jim McCubbin (Shirley) Centralia, MO and Richard McCubbin (Sue) of New Bloomfield, MO;  sons, Jay McCubbins (Margie) of College Place, WA, Jeffrey McCubbins (Lisa) of Mexico, MO; daughters, June (McCubbins) Kelly (Greg) of Sturgeon, MO, and Jill (McCubbins) McCoy (Roger) of Centralia, MO.  J.C. also leaves behind 12 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

His wife, Mary McCubbins, brothers, Gershom McCubbin, McKenneth McCubbin, Silas McCubbin, Howard McCubbin, Clyde McCubbin, Bill McCubbin and sisters, Katherine (McCubbin) Ward, Aquilla McCubbin and parents, Clayton R. McCubbin and Janie Keys McCubbin preceded him in death.

Family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 AM, Friday, January 5, 2024, at Grandview Baptist Church, 8300 N. Rt. Z, Centralia, MO with a Celebration of Life Service to follow at 11:00 AM.  The burial will follow the service at Grandview Cemetery.
