Beat Westran Lady Hornets, 68-50
It might have been worth the wait for fans of the Blue and White.
Sturgeon’s Lady Bulldogs basketball team is no longer winless.
The evening of January 29 they beat the Westran Lady Hornets in the seventh-place game of the Sturgeon Tournament.
“Such a young team, they have the drive to win but have had so many obstacles,” one parent-fan told the Fireside Guard afterward.
And win they did.
Sturgeon dominated every quarter: 23-6 at end of the first, 35-23 going into halftime, 52-32 at the end of the third and they finished it off, 68-50 in front of their home crowd at the Sturgeon R-V Middle School Gym
“It’s a big monkey off their back, the girls were great and it is good to see them smiling,” Lady Bulldogs Head Coach Dan Kruse said.
Nicole Vanlandingham led Sturgeon with 16 points, Shelby Bailey – 15 and Aydan Wilhite – 14.
“That’s absolutely typical Nicole, she plays so hard,” Kruse said of their lead Vanlandingham. That was part of our game plan tonight, be more aggressive and draw some free throws.”
He also complimented Bailey’s play.
“Consistent, that’s our word for Shelby, her growth from last year to this year has really been amazing. She s our engine that keeps us going. I’m really glad she’s on our team.”
