Margaret Elizabeth Johnson of Chelmsford MA passed away at the age of 94 on January 5, 2024.
Margaret was born on September 22, 1929 in Mansfield Ohio to Michael and Catherine Burns. She graduated from Bowling Green State University in Ohio with a BS in Business Administration and later married Donald Johnson in Mansfield Ohio in 1955. He preceded her death on May 5, 2010.
Margaret worked at advertising agencies after college in Cleveland and then Denver after she moved to Colorado with some girl friends. While directing a church social group in Colorado, she met Don while ice skating. They raised three boys in Colorado before relocating to Pennsylvania and then Missouri. She lived in Centralia Missouri, for 58 years, prior to relocating to Chelmsford MA in 2022.
In college, Margaret was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority and active in the synchronized swimming club. For 22 years, she taught swimming and life-saving in Pennsylvania and Missouri for the YMCA and Red Cross. In Centralia, she taught all age groups to swim, including adult women who were afraid of the water. She worked for A. B. Chance in Centralia Missouri for 17 years as a print room clerk.
In Centralia, she was a member of the United Methodist Church and was active in the women’s group and the junior and senior high youth groups. She was a member of the PTA and participated as a room mother. She was active in Cub Scouts as a den mother for ten years. She and her husband were also chimney sweeps for several years. Margaret was a member of the Columbia Missouri Track Club and ran in races with her husband. As a member of the Centralia Country Club, Margaret was an avid golfer and published the club newsletter for many years. She also published over a dozen essays in the Centralia Fireside Guard and Columbia Tribune.
Margaret is survived by a son, Brian Johnson and his wife Kathy of Groton Massachusetts, five grandchildren, Kyle Johnson, Brittany Johnson, Curtis Johnson, Megan Sherman and Lauren Johnson, and 1 great grandchild, Bruce. Her parents, her brother Jim, her husband Donald and two sons, Terry and Paul, precede her in death.
