Panthers fall to Tolton, 37-20
Centralaia’s football season ended in Columbia.
Friday night, November 8, the Centralia Panthers lost to the Tolton Trailblazers, 37-20 in the second round of the district tournament.
After Tolton took an early lead with field goal, the first the Panthers had seen this season, Charlie Robinson put Centralia on top with a five yard slant rush, putting a smile on the Panther fans in the stands, whose numbers may have surpassed the home-team crowd.
Centralia started the second quarter with an 8-3 lead
It didn’t last. Tolton came back and ground its way down the field for a five-yard touchdown run, capped by a successful extra point kick.
Halftime saw Tolton leading, 9-8
Tolton came out in the second-half and put Centralia on its heals with an 18-yard touchdown pass.
With 1:53 left in the third, Rex Bryson hit back for Centralia with a 14-yard touchdown run.
Tolton blunted the enthusiasm less than a minute later with a 29-yard touchdown run.
Moments later Centralia started the fourth quarter, down 14 to Tolton’s 23.
Both teams scored in the fourth, but Tolton had the edge and kept it.
They scored two more touchdowns, one off a 74-yard run at the 10:42 mark and a game finishing 10 yard run with a minute and 18 seconds left.
Charlie Robinson scored the Panthers’ last touchdown of the season finishing a Panther drive with a two yard blast up the middle with 5:04 left.
Centralia’s offense gained 265 yards against Tolton. They rushed for 245 yards and passed for 20.
Centralia’s defense held Tolton to 487 yards, 339 rushing and 148 passing.
Rex Bryson, Ian Tuggle and Josh Russell led Centralia’s defense/ with six tackles each Bryson had five solos and one assisted. Tuggle had four solos and two assisted, Russell was three and three.
Robinson led Centralia’s ground game with 122 yars in 15 attempts, scoring two two touch downs.
Peyson Bryson rushed for 71 yards in 20 attempts and Rex Bryson rushed for 21 yards in eight attempts and scored one touchdown.
Centralia finished the season with a7-4 record and one-third of the Clarence Cannon Conference championship.
Tolton now has a 9-2 record and plays Lafayette County Friday for the district championship.
