Panthers split basketball difference with Hallsville

Panthers win 70-35, Lady Panthers lose 58-53 in overtime

It was a busy night for the Centralia Panthers basketball teams.

The Lady Panthers lost to the visiting Hallsville Lady Indians, 58-53 in overtime.

The Panther boys beat the Indians 70-35.

Guy Moran led Centralia with a game-high 27 points, followed by John Durant with 11 and Grant Erisman with 8. Hallsville was led by Jaylen George with 14. Cooper Crane, Colton Hobbs and Clayton Cook scored six each. At the right, Jackson wells score two, on the far right Erisman shoots to score.

In the boys’ game, Centralia led consistently: 19-7 in the first quarter; 43-15 in the second; 64-24 in the third and 70-35 in the end. The Centralia boys team is now 5-1.

On the Lady Panthers’ side, Mary Kate Bennett led Centralia with 23 points, followed by Joella Melegrito with nine. Baylee Beard and Claire Bennett scored six each.

Avery Oetting led Hallsville with 27. Hope Crane and Taylor Jones backed her up with 10 and eight points respectively.

The Lady Panthers led the first three quarters: 14-4; 29-20 and 41-27. In the fourth, Hallsville scored 20 points to Centralia’s six.

Hallsville Coach Matt Heet said switching from man to a zone defense, made a difference. “We changed or pressure, going from man to zone, that seemed to bother them. But really, we just started making shots.”

Hallsville is now 5-3.

Contrail’s boys and girls teams play Friday, December 27 at the MRMC Shootout in Soberly. The boys play at 6:30 p.m., the girls, 8 p.m.
