By the time you’re reading this article, voting day will have come and gone and there is a chance that we will have the results of the 2024 election. Regardless if we receive these results on Wednesday or some time next week or longer, there will be someone new sitting in the White House by the middle of January in 2025 and for many, that reality is worrisome. This election has brought out plenty of fear, anxiety, and uncertainty. Both sides are held in tension, hoping and praying that the other side doesn’t win the election. What happens when the side you don’t want to win wins? What happens when your side wins? When elections come and go, we often hear one particular phrase from Christians, “God is still on His throne.” or we hear “Christ is King.” But what do these phrases mean? And how are they to impact our thinking especially during an election season? I’m so glad you asked.
Let’s unpack the phrases themselves. To understand the idea that God is still on His throne and that Jesus is King, turn to Revelation four and five. These two chapters are jam packed full of powerful images and a glorious vision seen by John. In this vision, there is one primary takeaway, and that is God is seated upon His throne. He always has been and He always will be. His position upon His throne means that He rules all of creation. All things are His and nothing comes close to standing up to God. The picture painted in Revelation reveals just that. An appearance like Jasper and carnelian, rainbows like emerald, lightning and thunder. All of this is to magnify God. Then you add the four living creatures and the twenty four elders who stand before the throne and worship God day and night and we are left with a powerful image. An image of a God who is not small or reserved, who cannot be contained to the box that we attempt to put God in. Instead what we have is the Maker of Heaven and Earth who is worthy of honor and glory and praise.
