Sam Fair and a friend work a sale at the annual Centralia R-VI Band Pie Auction and Chili Supper.

In some places, the phrase “Sing for your supper,” comes to mind.

The evening of March 7 at Chester Boren Middle School, the phrase “Play for Pie,” came to at least one observer.

The 180 members of the Centralia R-VI School district treated the at-least 500-member audience to a three-hour, 15 piece performance.

It was not all music though, unless one considers the high-spirited auctioneering action of Sam Fair and his father Bob who ushered the crowd through 27 pies, several gallons of chili and vegetable soup and $10,500.

The funds will go toward providing food for band students during summer band camp and fall marching competitions,” said Christina Ray, a long-time event volunteer.
