School district, Centralia aldermen, revamping SRO agreement

The castle is not unguarded and there are plans to make it even safer.

That is one way of looking at a discussion with Heather Russell, Centralia city administrator and Stephen Chancellor, superintendent of the R-VI school district.

Chancellor stressed providing for the safety and security of R-VI’s students is a team effort, a partnership, Russell added, between the city and the district.

They agreed it is one aspect of a larger relationship.

“When one does well, so does the other,” Chancellor said. “This is part of an ongoing creation of a long-term vision of mutual support.”

They said there is a mutual interest in collaboration whenever and wherever appropriate.

They addressed the work of Centralia Police  Department officer David Davenport as SRO.

“Davenport is still in the schools,” Russell said, “just not in the same manner. With our current drop in officer numbers we have had to pull him back to patrol somewhat to help provide for the public safety. He is still available if the schools need him.”

She said, however, that the CPD as a whole has been encouraged to add the school district’s campuses to their rounds.”
