Kindergartner tries to help father fight cancer
Ryan Nichols Jr., knew something was wrong, even if he did not really understand it all.
That is understandable. The cancer curriculum for Chance Elementary kindergarten class is not deep.
Ryan Jr understands enough though.
He understands his father, Ryan Nichols is sick now, and cannot drive to Moberly every morning to work at the Walmart Distribution Center.
Extended medical leave, which his father Ryan is now on, is also not a frequent topic in kindergarten classrooms.
He also understands that when his father can’t go to work, has to drive to Columbia every morning to see a doctor, and money is tight.
This summer, his father was fighting some melanoma on his face.
Those tumors said his niece Hannah Gilpin, were benign.
However, when operating, physicians discovered one of his saliva glands was cancerous.
Per the GoFundMe page his family posted: “Ryan has been unable to work since the surgery and now he is facing more time off. He will be starting radiation five days a week for six weeks. In this time he will have to drive from Moberly to Columbia every day.”
Ryan Jr. told his aunt Hannah Gilpin he wanted to help, more than once.
The afternoon of Tuesday, September 17, found him in front of his mother’s house at 512 N. Hickman with Styrofoam cups, and a big plastic pitcher of lemonade and a politician’s campaign sign that had a big piece of neon yellow poster board taped over it.
