The Sturgeon boys basketball team started their run at 36 Annual Sturgeon Invitational Basketball Tournament with a little bit of suspense.
The first five minutes of the number-three seeded Sturgeon Bulldogs saw them down 6-0 against South Callaway with fans of the Blue and White looking on with concern.
Then, around the five minute mark, Jacob Brooks put them not the board with two points-worth
of free throws.
A minute later, Jake Snider sank a west-side three point shot.
Logan Flaspohler traded dunks to make it 11-9, still South Callaway.
Then with a minute left in the quarter, Brooks tied the game 11-11 with a rim-hanging dunk.
Another three pointer by Flaspohler, followed by a rebound dunk, put Sturgeon on top 16-11 as the quarter ended.
From there Sturgeon put it in overdrive.
At halftime it was 33-17, Sturgeon. They finished the third up 49-3o and after Sturgeon Head Coach Michael Smith emptied his bench, won the game 68-39.
Snider led the team and the game with 26 points, followed by Flaspohler with 12 and Brooks with 11.
Tyler Potter led South Callaway with 11.
The Sturgeon Lady Bulldogs opened their side of the tournament with a 67-27 loss to Salisbury.
They play New Bloomfield 7:30 p.m., January 29 a the Sturgeon Middle School.
They boys play Salisbury, 7:30 p.m., January 30 at the high school.
